BARCELONA - SANCTUARY FOR YOUR DOLPHINS!

(TEXT IN GERMAN AND ENGLISH)

==================

DEUTSCH:

EILT!

==================

Closure of Dolphinarium - Sanctuary in the Caribbean

Dear Sir or Madam,

I very much welcome your decision to close your dolphinarium at the zoo by the end of the year. However, I am extremely worried that there is a possibility that the four dolphins will simply be deported to another dolphinarium. I would like to speak strongly against that option!

I ask that you consider the option of establishing a sanctuary, possibly in the Caribbean, where your four dolphins and the two dolphins on loan to the Dolphinarium Oceanografic in Valencia, can spend their much deserved retirement.

Please consider cooperation with the aquarium in Baltimore, which has announced that it will set up such a sanctuary. You will surely find a strong financial partner at Merlin Entertainment, which has been looking for such a place for its dolphins for 10 years.

The establishment of supervised bays will be inevitable in the future as the trend towards further closure of dolphinaria in the EU will continue, even though a new dolphinarium has now been built in Lanzarote. After more than 60 closures of formerly 90 dolphinariums in Western Europe, all remaining facilities are in a tight spot. The current dolphinariums are overcrowded and the operators even accept that although it is absolutely against the nature of the dolphins, groups of only male animals are kept.

Please do not continue to contribute to this misery and take responsibility! You have kept dolphins in captivity since 1965. Many of the animals have lost their lives. You owe it to these dolphins!

At least one more transport still lies ahead for these animals. ConnyLand in Switzerland has demonstrated that a relocation of dolphins to the Caribbean can be organised and managed. In 2013, ConnyLand successfully relocated its last two dolphins to a facility in Jamaica.

I trust you will make the only right decision for the benefit of the dolphins.

Sincerely

(XXX - Your Name)

ÜBERSETZUNG DES BRIEFES ZUR EIGENEN INFORMATION:

==================

Seit 1965 halten Sie Delfine in Gefangenschaft.

E-MAIL CAMPAIGN TO TAKE PART IN

BARCELONA - A SANCTUARY FOR YOUR DOLPHINS!

URGENT!

Another dolphinarium in the EU will close down!

The city of Barcelona will not expand its dolphinarium at the zoo, but close it permanently this year!

At the end of 2016, four of the seven politically represented parties in the City Council and one deployed task group decided not to expand the dolphinarium but to close it by the end of 2018 at the latest.

The city council and the mayors are looking at reorienting the zoo, focusing more on quality rather than quantity. The authorities finally came to the conclusion that the dolphins could not be provided with sufficient space (the basins are only three meters deep) and that the dolphins were stressed by the noise created by the visitors. These are also reasons why two of the six dolphins were loaned to the larger dolphinarium in Valencia for 10 years, back in September 2016. In addition, keeping dolphins in captivity in order to preserve the species would make no sense and is outdated in this time & age.

Some of the four remaining dolphins, three of which are offspring and one of which was caught from the wild off Cuba, suffer from diseases. They will not participate in any conventional shows doing silly tricks in front of an audience until their hand over.

The city of Barcelona now has several options as to what should be done with its total of six dolphins. These options have been discussed and a decision will be made soon!

Transferring the dolphins to other dolphinaria is of course the worst case solution.
Releasing the dolphins to the wild is not an option.
The establishment of a bay where the dolphins are looked after by humans would be the most optimal solution for the marine mammals.

Time is running out!

Let us all together ask those responsible in Barcelona to set up a sanctuary for their dolphins!

Please take part in our email-online campaign and join us in urging the responsible officials!

Please send the following letter by e-mail in English to the mayors, city councils and parties in Barcelona. Contact details will follow.

Thank you very much for participating!
